- The Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express was heading towards Chennai. The train derailed and collided with a goods train standing on another track and the engine of the passenger train climbed over the goods train. Several coaches of the Coromandel overturned on the tracks.
- The Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express was running on an adjacent track towards Howrah. Meanwhile, he collided with the overturned coaches of the Coromandel Express on the track. After this collision, the coaches of the Coromandel Express also derailed.
- The accident is said to have happened at Bahanga Bazar station in Balasore district, which is located 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar.
- According to officials, coaches of the Coromandel derailed at around 6.55 pm, while coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah Express coming from the other side derailed at 7 pm. That is, this incident happened in a span of just five minutes.
